Study Contents
The two-semester orientation course provides basic knowledge in information systems, computer science and business administration. Students acquire knowledge of computer basics, information systems, software development, the analysis of data structures and accounting.
The in-depth phase in the three subject areas begins in the third semester. The curriculum now includes setting up business information systems, databases and software engineering. Business management expertise is expanded with knowledge from the areas of cost and performance accounting and marketing. Knowledge of IT management and legal principles is also taught.
In the fourth semester, in addition to further consolidation, students apply what they have learned in their first IT project, which they carry out as group work in Germany or abroad. In addition, students are given their first degree of freedom here by choosing a compulsory elective subject (FWP).
The fifth semester is also practice-oriented. As part of larger IT projects in companies, students have the opportunity to independently put their acquired know-how into practice. This practical phase is supplemented by accompanying events, which also ensure contact with the university.
In the last two semesters, students should be able to choose further compulsory elective modules according to their inclinations and future career aspirations and finally write their Bachelor thesis.
Career Expectations
A wide range of tasks awaits you in the field of information systems. Training in both business administration and computer science will enable you to work directly at the interface between the company's specialist departments and IT specialists, acting as a mediator between the two worlds. At the same time, the training also offers you the opportunity to apply your specialist knowledge directly at the heart of the company's information system landscape.
This diverse job profile includes, among other things, the management of large networked IT systems, application programming, system analysis, the further development and maintenance of existing software systems, the design of new applications, business process (re)engineering, the planning and implementation of large IT projects, sales and training, and web design.
Given the general shortage of skilled workers, the career opportunities here will remain very good in the future.

Dual and practice-oriented studies
The Information Systems degree program can be studied as a combined degree or a degree with in-depth practical experience:
In the combined degree program, you study alongside vocational training (with IHK/HWK qualification) at a practical partner of your choice. You start with 3 or 3.5 years of vocational training at the practical partner and after approximately 14 months, you begin your first semester of study at the same time.
The program with in-depth practical experience means that during your academic studies, you complete intensive practical phases with a practical partner of your choice that go beyond the mandatory internships – but without pursuing vocational training. You can start your studies first and then decide on a subject-oriented intensive practical phase in a later semester.
One variant of the study program with in-depth practical experience is the ICS model, which is offered in collaboration with the ICS support association in the Faculty of Computer Science. In this model, the faculty nominates the best students in the year for the program after the first few semesters.
