Information about the Internship Semester
Internship semesters
In the 5th (or alternatively the 6th) semester, a 20-week internship puts the knowledge you have acquired into practice. You retain your student status during this integrated semester. Practical courses, held on Fridays, ensure that you remain in contact with the university. A practical seminar gives you the opportunity to present and discuss your practical experiences.
Exemption from the internship semester
Exemption from the internship semester is generally not possible. In any case, attendance at courses is mandatory. Further details can be found in the general guidelines for recognition. If in doubt, please contact our internship coordinator.
Registration for the internship
Please register your internship with the Internship Office. The relevant application form is available there for you to fill out. You can prove your company's approval either by having the company stamp the application or by providing a copy of your contract. Of course, an email or letter from the internship company stating that you can complete an internship at this company in the coming winter semester is also considered proof of approval.
Counseling
The internship office is responsible for handling the internship semester or exemption. The internship commissioner is responsible for technical questions regarding the training plan, suitability of companies, etc., as well as for any problems that arise during the internship.
Internship
You should start looking for a suitable position for your first internship at the beginning of the 4th semester at the latest. You can find companies offering internships at the Internship Office, at the Student Representative Office and on the online job market.
Internship abroad
You have the option of completing your internship with an internship abroad. In this case, the courses accompanying your studies can be made up in the following semester. For an internship abroad, you should find out about the options available in good time and start looking for an internship position at least at the beginning of the third semester.
Internship Curriculum
All internship curricula with the required training content can be found on the “Mandatory internship” page of the Internship Office.
Internship Seminar (PSEM)
The internship seminar (PSEM) is a compulsory course for all students who are completing an internship. It only makes sense to attend the internship seminar once you have started your internship and can therefore talk about your experiences. It normally takes place on Fridays. The PSEM can be attended during your internship (Internship Friday) or in subsequent semesters if you were unable to attend the PSEM during your internship. Reasons for this could be, for example
- You are completing your internship abroad
- You are completing your internship disproportionately far away from the university (including participants in the ICS program)
Please note that the PSEM is not offered every semester. If the PSEM is not offered in your degree program during your internship, you may be able to attend the PSEM of another degree program (IN, TI, WI). Ms. Claudia Bäurle will be happy to to answer any questions you may have about whether and when the PSEM is offered.
Internship Report
Students enrolled in the Bachelor degree programs in Computer Science, Business Informatics, International Informations Systems and Computer Engineering must submit a practical report at the end of their internship. The following procedure applies:
- Students submit two reports. The first report, the actual practical report, is submitted after two-thirds of the internship (end of November in the winter semester, end of May in the summer semester). A template with instructions is provided for writing the report.
- The head of the respective internship seminar evaluates the reports and provides feedback to the students within one month. The revised version of the first report is submitted together with the second report.
- The second report contains the personal statement at the end of the internship.
- The reports are uploaded as PDF files via a Moodle group.
- The proper submission of the internship reports is reported to the Internship Office at the end of the semester.
Internship Commissioner
Internship Commissioner of the Faculty of Computer Science is Prof. Dr. Stefan Bensch.
