Obituary
Peter Dreßler passed away on July 4, 2023, at the age of 82. Prof. Dr. Dreßler served at the School of Computer Science from November 1, 1981, until his retirement on October 1, 2005.
As a professor of information technology, Peter Dreßler was a pioneer. He established the field of business informatics at the newly founded Department of Computer Science.
Born in Franconia, he was actually supposed to take over his father’s business. However, he decided to study economics in Munich. He then worked at Siemens on Hofmannstraße and became a leading authority in the field of COBOL application software for inventory management. He gave lectures and conducted training sessions from Munich to Moscow. Even after leaving Siemens, Peter Dreßler remained so indispensable that he had to consult for major clients on a fee basis while teaching in Augsburg.
In his private life, he was a nature lover. Whenever possible, he spent time at his second home in the mountains, situated at an altitude of 1,000 meters. As a teenager, he was a gifted 100-meter runner; later in life, he became an avid golfer and convertible driver. He often left the top down even in bad weather.
In his final years, Peter Dreßler was seriously ill and was lovingly cared for by his longtime wife, Brigitte, until he passed away shortly before his 83rd birthday.
Our thanks go to his longtime friend, roommate in the mountains, and golfing partner Hans von Windau, from whose moving obituary we have been permitted to quote here.
