Practical Experience During Studies

As a university of applied sciences, we place great value on training students in a practice-oriented and future-ready way. Especially in the later semesters, our faculties offer exciting practical projects — particularly in STEM fields.

These projects often have a research focus and are conducted closely with industry partners. They provide an excellent opportunity for students to prove their skills in real-world settings and build valuable connections. But there are challenges:

• Many projects need committed students, yet participation can be low — sometimes because of language barriers or lack of individual support.

• Until the end of 2022, we were able to support many regional service-learning projects thanks to funding from the “Innovative Hochschule” initiative. Without this funding, the university had to rethink its cooperation with businesses and society, and unfortunately, some of these projects were lost — even though they are very important for recruiting international talent.

We assist faculties in organizing industry and regional service-learning projects while actively including international students. Our support includes:

• Small project grants to cover costs such as design and printing for regional service-learning projects

• Special support services for international students to help them participate more easily — such as orientation counseling, coaching, and language courses

• Guidance and advice during project implementation

• Help finding additional funding and financing options, for example through programs like HAW.International or scholarships like Stibet
