The THA_ias offers the opportunity to gain experience in the application of agile software development techniques. These are acquired through practical projects in the Augsburg University of Applied Sciences innovation lab (THA_innolab) with partners from industry.
The institute also offers events on basic, application-oriented topics related to software development (version control with git, task management with jira, DevOps, etc.), please search for current events here under News.
In the context of theses, current topics can be worked on in depth.

Co-Founder Wanted for "DialectiQ"
We are looking for a co-founder to join our upcoming startup, DialectiQ.
Our Vision
We offer an AI-powered training platform designed to measurably enhance the communication skills of leaders. Through realistic simulations, data-driven feedback, and the integration of professional coaches, we help executives navigate critical conversation scenarios—significantly boosting team motivation, performance, and retention.
We are working on an application for an EXIST funding and therefore looking for a Co-funder with focus on at least one of the topics:
LLM Design To develop our dialogue engine using prompting, LLM fine-tuning, RAG, and transformer models.
Backend Engineering: To build scalable backend services for our simulation, feedback, and analytics engines.

Current Thesis Topics
We are currently offering the following thesis topics:
1. (Business) Computer Science / Information Systems
Topic: Development of a Dashboard for KPI-Based Progress Measurement in the Application of Communication Techniques
Motivation: Communication techniques such as active listening, questioning techniques, feedback rules, or conversation structuring play a central role in almost all professional contexts. Although many companies specifically train their employees in these techniques, there is often a lack of a systematic way to measure individual learning progress and its long-term transfer into practice. As a result, training measures are often evaluated subjectively and rarely backed by data. A digital dashboard could help present the application of communication techniques transparently using suitable KPIs, making progress visible and allowing targeted improvement measures to be derived. Especially in combination with AI-based training or feedback systems, this creates the opportunity for continuous, personalized learning support.
Research Question: What requirements must a dashboard for KPI-based progress measurement in the application of communication techniques meet, and how can it be implemented as a prototype and evaluated?
Expected Results:
Overview of relevant communication techniques and existing approaches to measuring success.
Identification of suitable KPIs to evaluate communication skills.
Development of a key performance indicator (KPI) model for progress measurement.
Functional and non-functional requirements for a dashboard visualizing communication progress.
Conceptual design of suitable visualization and interaction mechanisms.
Prototypical implementation of a web-based dashboard.
Evaluation of the dashboard regarding usability, clarity, and added value for learners.

2. IA / IMS (Interactive Media / Interactive Media Systems)
Topic: AI-Powered Evaluation and Further Development of the THA 360° Feedback App
Motivation: True to the motto "Communication is key!", continuous, structured feedback between lecturers and students, as well as among students themselves, helps improve learning and teaching at the THA (Technical University of Applied Sciences Augsburg). However, feedback only unfolds its full value when it is not just collected, but also meaningfully evaluated and made actionable. At THA, a functional prototype of a web-based 360° feedback app (
feedback.informatik.tha.de) already exists and is currently in a productive testing phase. This forms the basis for this project: Building on the existing tool, an AI-powered evaluation concept is to be developed to derive concrete, personalized insights into strengths and areas for development from the collected feedback. To ensure this feature achieves its full impact, the app's UI/UX concept is to be modernized in parallel, sustainably increasing usability and acceptance among the target groups.Research Question: How can a 360° feedback tool with AI-powered evaluation be designed so that students and lecturers receive the most meaningful insights into personal strengths and development potentials—both at an individual and group level?
Expected Results:
Requirements Analysis: Gathering functional and non-functional requirements through user surveys and analysis of the existing app, with a specific focus on information needs during feedback evaluation.
AI Evaluation Concept: Overview and justified selection of suitable methods for automated feedback analysis, including approaches for deriving individual strengths and potentials.
UI/UX Concept: Elaborated design concept including wireframes and high-fidelity prototypes.
Usability Testing: Conducting and evaluating tests with representative users, along with documentation of the results.

3. IA / IMS (Interactive Media / Interactive Media Systems)
Topic: Linking Generated Texts with Animations to Design Expressive AI Avatars
Motivation: Communication with AI models currently takes place primarily via text or speech. However, companies are increasingly developing graphical interfaces where a human-like avatar delivers the AI's statements. The so-called MetaHumans by Unreal Engine appear particularly realistic; however, these are only available within the Unreal Engine ecosystem. While such characters can be created using character builders, the challenge remains: how do you link the texts generated by an AI model for such an avatar with animations for gestures and facial expressions? Existing solutions, such as those found in video games, need to be adapted for dynamically generated texts in order to improve dynamic dialogues.
Research Question: How can texts generated by an AI model be enhanced with animations so that an avatar can also express emotions and subtle underlying messages using facial expressions and gestures?
Expected Results:
List of functional and non-functional requirements for an interface between text and animations.
Research and overview of potential implementation methods.
List of functional and non-functional requirements for animations and character rigging to effectively utilize such animations.
Web-based prototype of an avatar that utilizes facial expressions and gestures based on texts generated by an AI model.
