Technology Transfer Centre “Digital Innovations in Lightweight design for Hydrogen-based- Technologies”

At Technology Transfer Centre (TTZ) in Gersthofen, researchers from the Technical University of Applied Sciences Augsburg (THA) are working since 2025 in cooperation with local companies on the development and application of modern and practice-oriented approaches in the areas of Lightweight and Hydrogen Technology. In light of the energy transition and climate change, companies face major challenges regarding energy consumption, climate protection, and global competition. In order to preserve industrial sites in the long term, it is necessary today to set the course toward energy-efficient and climate-friendly technologies.

The TTZ Gersthofen focuses on two key technologies: Hydrogen and Lightweight

The aim of Technology Transfer Centre “Digital Innovations in Lightweight design for Hydrogen-based- Technologies” is to strengthen and expand competitiveness of companies in Bavaria, particularly in Gersthofen and the surrounding region, in light of the ongoing comprehensive transformation process. It will support companies in harnessing climate-neutral energy sources, making industrial production more sustainable and resource-efficient, and developing competitive solutions in the field of mobility.

Technology Transfer Centres (TTZs) are funded initiatives by the Free State of Bavaria

Since 2025, the fifth TTZ of THA is funded as part of the initiative “High-tech Transfer Bavaria”, which is part of the “High-tech Agenda Bavaria” of the the Free State of Bavaria, and supported by the city of Gersthofen.

The purpose of a TTZ is to ensure the competitiveness of a region through research findings

To achieve this, Technology Transfer Centres make a specific area of technical knowledge usable in collaboration with mainly small and medium-sized enterprises, but also large companies.

This means that companies collaborate with a university of applied sciences to research and develop practical solutions. These joint projects can take various forms of collaboration – from small workshops to the development of concrete solutions, and even research into their own innovations.

The thematic focus of a TTZ is determined by the needs of the region. The TTZ Gersthofen affiliated with THA, supported as part of the High-tech Agenda Bavaria, is particularly geared toward the needs of the industry in Bavarian Swabia and the district of Augsburg – without its services being limited to this region.
