Awards for Students and Alumni 2025
January
Bavarian Engineering Award: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sergej Rempel and his team win first place for developing the carbon-recycled concrete used in the Augsburg Surf Wave. The award is presented by the Bavarian Chamber of Civil Engineers.
Students Shape the Future: E2D master’s students Niklas Lorenzen, Julian Buttenmüller, and Mona-Helen Pfeifer share first place with a team from the Technical University of Munich in the international student competition “Students Shape the Future.” Julia Wawretschka and Saskia Bäurle took seventh place.

SAIV Student Competition: Students in the Bachelor’s program in Architecture are honored for their interdisciplinary designs for a student residence hall featuring sustainable timber construction in Augsburg’s Old Town. Third prize goes to Finn Held, Clara Leinen, and Jule Schreiber; two first prizes go to Alina Lemke and Paula Sausner, as well as to Lea Krepold, Nina Müller, and Emma Peetz.

Startup Radar: In one of the most important rankings of startup culture at universities, the THA takes an outstanding third place with THA_funkenwerk.

Award for Excellence in Teaching: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Claudia Meitinger from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering receives the “Award for Excellence in Teaching” from Markus Blume, Bavarian Minister of State for Science and the Arts and Member of the State Parliament.

ADC Talent Award: Students and graduates of the Faculty of Design receive a total of ten “Nägel” awards and other honors for their semester projects and theses.
CHE University Ranking: Several degree programs at THA achieve top rankings in the CHE University Ranking. The programs in architecture, civil engineering, electrical and information technology, energy-efficient planning and construction (E2D), mechanical engineering, mechatronics, and environmental and process engineering are re-evaluated.

Certificate of Typographic Excellence: Hannah Drislane, a graduate of the Bachelor’s program in Communication Design, is awarded the “Certificate of Typographic Excellence” by the Type Directors Club New York (TDC) for her thesis.
isi NEO: Students from the Immenstadt Vocational Training Center (BZI) and architecture students from THA win the isi NEO School Innovation Award for the project “Strom.Linien.Form”—the development and implementation of a redesigned enclosure for a transformer substation in Immenstadt.

WBG Prize: The WBG Foundation for Architecture and Civil Engineering, in collaboration with the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering, announces a student competition on topics related to urban development and architecture in Augsburg. The WBG Prize, worth 1,000 euros, is awarded to Tom Meyer; honorable mentions go to Theresa Brinkmann, Marie Schütz, and Elias Weißer, as well as to Tom Hanstein.

Formula Student France: The THA’s high-voltage team achieves an outstanding third place at the Transpolis test track. In the separate driverless category—that is, for autonomous driving—the team takes first place.

Augusta – Business Award for Women: THA alumna Julia Barton, a graduate of the bachelor’s program in Communication Design and the master’s program in Design and Communication Strategy, has been honored with the 2025 Augusta Award in the “Founder of the Year” category. She is a co-founder of the Augsburg-based creative and web agency YEAH.
Young Scientist Award from the International Union of Radio Science (URSI) / Karl-Jörg Langenberg Award: Markus Theil, a doctoral candidate and research assistant in the Department of Electrical Engineering, has received two honors. For his work “Measurements of Rotationally Symmetric Antenna Arrays for Short-Range Communication,” he receives the Young Scientist Award from the German National Committee of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI) and, in addition, the Karl-Jörg Langenberg Award from the Thomas Weiland Science Foundation.
VDI Prize: The Augsburg regional chapter of the Association of German Engineers (VDI e. V.) honors Alicia Maria Jahn for her master’s thesis on digital fire protection in the Energy Efficiency Design program.
Dachwelten: Xjuscha Antz, Isabel Bodenmiller, Enrico Pepelnik, and Johannes Zwicker, students in the Master’s program in Architecture, took third place in the Dachwelten university competition with their design “Zur Tanke.”
Professor of the Year: In the nationwide competition organized by the UNICUM Foundation, two THA professors were honored: Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Martina Königbauer (Faculty of Electrical Engineering) took second place in the Engineering and Computer Science category. Prof. Dr. Sabine Joeris (School of Business) takes third place in the category of Economics and Law.

THA Teaching Award: The THA Teaching Awards go to Prof. Dr. habil. Klaus Kellner (Seminar category) from the School of Business, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rüdiger Weitzmann (Lecture category) from the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering, and Oliver Heiss (Adjunct Faculty category), also from the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering.
Bavarian State Medal for Outstanding Contributions to the Environment: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang Rommel is honored by Thorsten Glauber, Bavarian State Minister for the Environment and Consumer Protection, for his long-standing commitment to environmental protection and sustainability.
ADC University Creativity Index: Thanks to its outstanding achievements in the field of design in recent years, THA ranks 5th in the ADC University Creativity Index. THA is thus the highest-ranked university in Bavaria.
IABSE Awards: For the collaborative research project “Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge over the Seeblickweg in Stuttgart,” Timo Krämer, project manager in the bridge engineering department at Harrer Ingenieure GmbH, and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sergej Rempel, an expert in carbon concrete at the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering, have won the “Commendation Prize” (main category “Project and Technology Awards”; subcategory “Innovation in Construction”) for the collaborative research project “Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge over the Seeblickweg in Stuttgart.”
Gersthofen City Art Prize: The winners of the Gersthofen City Art Prize #digitalArt 2025 are all students or alumni of the THA: Amelie Kallup – “Forget FoMo” (1st place), Dorian Spiegelhauer – “Captain BlipBlop” (2nd place), and Jannike
Bode – “Anna” (3rd place).

DAAD Prize: The THA awards the 2025 DAAD Prize to Vladimir Varaksin, a student in the Bachelor’s program in Business Informatics. With this award, the university recognizes outstanding academic achievements as well as exceptional social and intercultural engagement among international students.
Bavarian University Promotion Award: Nils Tenzer, a graduate of the E2D program, impressed the jury in the “Circular and Regenerative Construction” category with his bachelor’s thesis titled “ADDED VALUE – Building Renovation in the Circular Economy and Greenhouse Gas Neutrality.”

Young Scientist Award: Ph.D. candidate Manuel Mikschl receives the award from the U.R.S.I. Landesausschuss in Deutschland e. V. for his innovative measurement method for characterizing high-frequency current-coupled clamps.
