The Institute for Agile Software Development (THA_ias) conducts research in close collaboration with partners from industry and academia, focusing on agile software development, programming languages and security, process digitization, and AI applications. The resulting projects cover a broad range of applications, such as digital health, production engineering, and the digitization of public administration. The education and training of software engineers to meet the challenges of the future is a central focus of the institute.

Loni's Space Journey

The "Loni's Space Journey" project, developed in close collaboration with the CCCF Freiburg initiative "Tigerherz – When Parents Have Cancer," has received an ADC award! Our Areas of Expertise

For more than 20 years, agile project techniques have promised better planning and execution of (software) development projects, and have since been hyped as a panacea for all kinds of project disasters. After a period of disillusionment, one thing is clear: things can still go wrong here, too. We have made it our mission to examine agile software development techniques, apply them in some of our projects, and further develop them. The insights we gain are intended to help apply these methods and techniques profitably in various contexts.

Digitalization is increasingly making its way into every aspect of people’s lives. The healthcare sector, too, is under increasing pressure to make greater use of the opportunities offered by digitalization. The big promise behind this is to streamline and automate administrative processes so that nurses and doctors can devote more time to actual patient care. But where should healthcare providers even begin with digitalization? Which technologies are worth considering? BPMN, CMMN, DMN, process engines, or perhaps robotic process automation? And the most important question of all: Can digitalization truly deliver on its promise of saving time in the end?

Together with our partners, we’re working to develop solutions for process digitization and find answers to these questions.

To overcome the challenges posed by the digitization of workflows and interactions in the private sphere, software developers and computer scientists need effective tools to keep pace with ever-increasing demands. The central question is: How can efficient software development (in terms of time, quality, and security requirements) be achieved? One way to approach this goal is to optimize existing resources (programming languages, tools, etc.) for efficient use. However, the analysis of architectural patterns and decisions regarding collaboration also play an important role.

Together with our partners, we are working to find answers to these questions.

The use of AI-based software solutions—particularly machine learning—offers enormous potential, but the prerequisites and potential applications are not always clear. As part of the Augsburg AI Network for Production Engineering, we offer SMEs an accessible opportunity to develop concepts for AI-based solutions through student projects, create prototypes of these solutions, and evaluate them.

THA_innolab

THA_innolab enables students to work on innovative projects with external partners. Agile software and systems development methods are used in this process. Together with the partners, solutions are developed to address current challenges in digitalization.

The project ideas come from a variety of sources (e.g., companies, participating students, or requests from the Augsburg area).

How can services or products be developed and designed responsibly? How can the societal impacts of digitalization be sustainably addressed early in the development process? The THA_digileg Digitalization Program offers students the opportunity to work in interdisciplinary teams to develop solutions to current societal issues and problems arising from specific real-world cases.

Students from all degree programs and faculties can participate in THA_digileg across its various areas of focus and “bring their own” projects:

Potential projects can come from various fields

  • as part of semester projects (4th/6th semester, master’s projects)
  • as part of student research projects conducted in groups
  • as part of research projects

THA_ias offers the opportunity to gain experience in applying agile software development techniques. This experience is gained through hands-on projects carried out at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Augsburg’s innovation lab in collaboration with industry partners.
