Faculty Statement on the Liberal Democratic Constitutional Order
In light of growing populist, anti-democratic, and discriminatory tendencies in society, we, the AGN Faculty Council, see the need to take a stand and send a clear message. With a pointed statement, we clearly oppose anti-democratic and anti-human sentiments—including those on campus. For the free, democratic constitutional state in Germany represents an invaluable achievement following the end of World War II. The democratic principles enshrined in the Basic Law by no means can be taken for granted. Especially at the university, it is essential to constantly defend these principles and to take a clear stand, both on and off campus.
Statement by the Faculty Council dated April 3, 2025
The Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences is firmly committed to the free democratic basic order and the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution.
As a faculty, we are committed to ensuring that all our members have equal and safe opportunities to participate in university events, and we firmly reject any form of group-based hostility.
We understand and share the concerns regarding anti-minority, extremist, and anti-democratic developments in our society and warn against the normalization of anti-constitutional positions and statements that are hostile to humanity. We therefore firmly reject anti-democratic, racist, anti-Semitic, and other inhuman statements and actions.
Our faculty members bear a special responsibility in this regard, to which they have committed themselves upon assuming their positions in accordance with the Constitution and the Higher Education Act: They advocate for the preservation of the free democratic basic order, bring scientifically verified facts into the public sphere, and help expose manipulative misinformation.
