The Internship Semester in the Bachelor Program in Social Work

The practicum semester is a central component of the social work program and combines academic content with practical experience.

During this semester, students become familiar with specific areas of social work practice, apply professional and methodological approaches when interacting with clients, and develop a professional understanding of their role in a social context. In doing so, practicum sites make an important contribution to the training of future professionals and actively contribute to the quality of social work. At the same time, successfully completing the practicum semester is one of the requirements for state certification as a social worker or social educator—it is considered an important seal of quality for professional qualifications.

The guidelines for the practicum semester serve as the basis for approval as a practicum site, the foundation for the practicum supervision process, and provide guidance on the role of students.

In addition, we provide here the recommendations for practicum supervision in social work issued by the Federal Working Group of Practicum Offices at Universities of Social Work (BAG Prax).
The THA’s Social Work Practicum Office is a member of BAG Prax. It sees itself as a nationwide network of practice departments that, through shared responsibility among universities, students, and the professional field, ensures and further develops quality, professional development, and state recognition in social work.
