Survey and Analysis of Regional Hospice and Palliative Care Networks Using an Adapted Quality Assessment Tool
Background
Hospice care and palliative care are characterized by collaboration among a wide range of care providers, such as private-practice physicians, hospitals, home health agencies, nursing homes, hospices, pharmacies, and chaplains. Depending on individual needs, these providers collaborate to maintain and improve the quality of life for patients and their families. In both outpatient and inpatient care, the coordination of these care networks is a key area of responsibility. It enables necessary treatment decisions to be made while taking all relevant perspectives into account, allows for the coordination of task distribution, and ensures continuous care with as little loss of information and friction as possible among the parties involved.
Since April 2022, the coordination of regional hospice and palliative care networks has been eligible for funding in every county and independent city through funds from statutory health insurance plans and alternative health insurance plans. However, there is currently no nationwide overview of existing hospice and palliative care networks, nor are there criteria or tools for assessing the quality of these networks.

The Augsburg Region’s Startup Incubator: Funkenwerk is the central hub for all idealists, startup dreamers, and aspiring entrepreneurs at Augsburg University of Applied Sciences. Its key areas of focus include entrepreneurship education, awareness-raising, networking, and consulting.

The Business Informatics Division of Fraunhofer FIT is distinguished by its techno-economic perspective on issues related to digitalization, with a strong focus on business administration. The division develops innovative solutions to specific problems that consistently integrate all levels of enterprise architecture. It also provides impetus for digitalization strategies and transformative change processes within companies. Its distinctive features include expertise at the intersection of financial management, information management, and business informatics, as well as the ability to combine methodological know-how at the highest scientific level with a client-, goal-, and solution-oriented approach.

The Digital Innovation Workshop is a program offered by the FIM Research Institute for Information Management and the Business Informatics division of Fraunhofer FIT. There, we combine applied research projects with renowned industry partners, publicly funded research, and teaching across numerous degree programs. In addition to innovations for digital products, services, and business models, our activities also focus on digital ecosystems and all phases of the digital innovation process. We support our industry partners through customized project formats—from identifying opportunities and developing ideas and concepts, through pilot testing, to market launch and scaling. This involves not only overcoming entrepreneurial challenges but also, increasingly, social challenges.
The Digital Sports Lab is an initiative of the FIM Research Institute for Information Management and the Business Informatics Division of Fraunhofer FIT. The sports market has always been a business sector shaped by traditions. However, digital transformation is increasingly shaping the development of the entire market and presenting it with new challenges. Professional sports organizations, in particular, must adapt and align their internal processes and offerings with the new expectations of fans and customers. In our research, we therefore examine the digital transformation in sports organizations from various perspectives and areas of action. For example, we focus on data-driven management approaches that offer clubs and teams competitive advantages through the use of big data and artificial intelligence. This includes, for example, data-based predictions of player potential or a comprehensive assessment of a player’s marketing potential. Another key area of our research is the study of the consequences of connected stadiums and arenas and their impact on fans’ consumer behavior.
The FIM Research Institute for Information Management is a research institution that, in close collaboration with the Business Informatics division of Fraunhofer FIT, uniquely combines research, practice, and teaching at the intersection of financial management, information management, and business informatics. At these institutions, researchers from Fraunhofer, the Universities of Augsburg and Bayreuth, the Technical University of Munich, and Augsburg University of Applied Sciences collaborate productively and collegially across faculties and universities. Our team currently consists of approximately 80 research staff and over 140 student assistants.
