Volunteer work has a long tradition at THA. The “Partner University for Fire Departments and Aid Organizations” partnership was launched back in 2016. Since then, the initiative has been under the patronage of Bavarian Minister of the Interior Joachim Herrmann.

As a partner university, the THA supports students who are active in fire departments and relief organizations, while also fostering opportunities for professional exchange and knowledge transfer. The university, emergency response organizations, and volunteers work closely together, bringing real-world experience into academic programs and the university, and jointly developing new approaches to civil protection and emergency services. In 2026, the Technical University of Applied Sciences Augsburg hosted the FUNKE symposium, which, under the theme “Operations Meet Research—How Practical Experience and Risk Analyses Make Us Better,” brought together more than 250 participants from the fields of practice, academia, and politics to discuss disaster and civil protection.
