Social Engagement

THA takes responsibility: Together with their students, faculty and researchers work to make the world a better place. Our social mission: As sought-after leaders with strong leadership skills, we shape the sustainable world of tomorrow—creatively, purposefully, and in a way that shapes the future.

At the Technical University of Applied Sciences Augsburg, we view social responsibility as an integral part of our educational mission. Universities do more than simply impart knowledge and scientific methods; they empower people to critically examine developments, design solutions, and take responsibility for the consequences of their actions. Especially in the face of major societal challenges—from climate change and digitalization to social upheaval and the future of our economy—we want to apply our expertise where it can make a difference.

For our students, this means they don’t just study for exams and their future careers; they also experience how their knowledge can solve real-world societal challenges. Through projects, collaboration with industry partners, and social engagement, they gain exposure to different perspectives, develop sound judgment, and strengthen skills such as teamwork, communication, initiative, and a sense of responsibility. In this way, we prepare them for a professional world in which academic excellence and social responsibility are increasingly intertwined.

The THA itself also benefits from this. Engagement with society, business, politics, and civil society brings new questions to teaching and research, fosters partnerships, and strengthens knowledge transfer. In this way, our university remains open to change, close to the people, and relevant to the region. For us, social responsibility is therefore not an afterthought in our daily university life, but an integral part of our identity: Shaping the world together.

Our Commitment in Practice

One example of how we put the THA’s commitment to society into practice is our partnership program with fire departments and emergency response organizations. For over 10 years now, we have been using this program to foster social engagement among students and faculty. This initiative has most recently led to the creation of a new degree program: the Bachelor’s in Emergency Response Engineering.

Student Involvement

In addition to their studies, students are involved in their own initiatives. Some of these are organized as registered associations.

Learn, Take Action, Make a Difference

Through service-learning at THA, students combine their academic knowledge with social engagement. In real-world projects, they work together with regional partners to address specific challenges—in a practical and responsible manner that creates added value for everyone involved.
