Mechatronics (B.Eng.)

Course Content
In order to meet future societal challenges, the design of technical systems must increasingly take into account aspects of sustainability, accessibility, and safety. The interdisciplinary bachelor program in Mechatronics equips students to independently apply scientific knowledge and methods in mechatronics and to quickly familiarize themselves with one of the numerous fields of application in mechatronics. To this end, the program imparts engineering expertise from the disciplines of electrical engineering, information technology, and mechanical engineering. The goal of the program is to design, implement, and analyze complex technical systems based on a holistic approach, while proceeding in a structured manner. To do justice to the comprehensive systems-oriented approach of mechatronics, methodological procedures are also taught.
Module Structure
The program is divided into an orientation phase (2 semesters), a foundational phase (1 semester), and an advanced phase (4 semesters). The latter includes a technical project, a practical study semester, and the thesis.
The program allows students to develop an individual academic profile during the specialization phase through a wide range of elective options.
Steps
Time Period
3rd and 4th semesters
Build-up phase
The foundational phase, comprising 30 CP, consists of six required modules that teach the fundamental competencies of an engineering program within the same subject areas as the introductory phase:
- Systems Theory
- Electrical Measurement Technology
- Operating Systems and Data Communication
- Machine Design and Materials Science
As in the orientation phase, students must take one interdisciplinary module.
3rd through 7th semesters
In-depth study phase
The specialization phase is designed to help students develop their individual academic profiles and consists of the following components:
- Modules within a specialization
- Technical Project Work
- Practical study semester
- Thesis, including a bachelor’s seminar
- Elective modules
Choice of Specialization
To accommodate the wide range of career paths available to engineers in Electrical Enigneering and Information Technology and to support students’ individual interests and inclinations, each student must choose one of the following specializations. For each specialization, there is a catalog of modules from which students can choose.

Career Prospects
Interaction with mechatronic systems is ubiquitous in our daily personal and professional lives. The bachelor program in Mechatronics prepares graduates for careers in various fields of application, such as
- Mobility
- Smart and efficient manufacturing
- Internet of Things
and in various professional roles, such as
- Product development
- System Integration
- Project Management
- Production Planning
- Service
in small and medium-sized businesses, startups, and large corporations, as well as in research institutions. To this end, the program imparts methods and specialized knowledge from various fields. Students are equipped to analyze and address complex challenges in the field of technical systems, propose innovative solution strategies, and implement products, all based on a solid foundation of specialized knowledge. The program leads to a first, professionally qualifying academic degree. Upon successful completion of the program, Augsburg University of Applied Sciences awards the academic degree of Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.).
In addition, the bachelor program qualifies graduates to pursue a master program in mechatronics or related fields.
Graduates of the bachelor program can
- develop innovative products systematically and strategically,
- simulate system behavior,
- technically implement and document prototypes at various stages of development, and
- work in a goal-oriented and responsible manner within diverse teams.
The program is anchored in the faculties of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and Mechanical and Process Engineering. Additional courses from other faculties (e.g., Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences) round out the curriculum.
International
Go out!
The Faculty of Electrical Engineering supports its students in taking the plunge and studying abroad. A great option for this is:
- a semester abroad
- an industry internship
- a project (during the break between semesters), or even
- a thesis
To assist students in planning and carrying out stays abroad, the Faculty has an International Faculty Coordinator available as a point of contact. Across all faculties, the Center for Languages and Intercultural Communication (ZSI) offers counseling and support.
On Campus!
But international and foreign language skills can also be acquired right here at the university. For example, some lectures are held in English.
The Center for Languages and Intercultural Communication offers numerous courses in its program that cover foreign languages and (inter)cultural knowledge.
For exchange students at THA
First-year international students can find support through the Buddy Program.
Application and Admission
To study mechatronics, you should have not only a passion for technology and the natural sciences, but also the ability to think and work logically, analytically, and systematically. Curiosity, ingenuity, and creativity will also help you succeed in this program.
You can only begin the Mechatronics program during the winter semester. A pre-program internship is not required!
