Project DARE

“New Data – New Responsibility” – DARE

eHealth applications represent a major opportunity to improve patient care—especially in follow-up care. However, their use is also likely to bring about shifts in the meaning of normative concepts such as responsibility, in role models, and in expectations of people and technology: How does the relationship between caregivers and patients change when data takes center stage? What role does the design of the technology play? What new responsibilities arise when data can be accessed remotely?

The goal of the DARE research project is, on the one hand, to assess the impact of eHealth applications in follow-up care on the self-conception of follow-up care, particularly nursing care. On the other hand, it also aims to consider their influence on ethical and social aspects.
The research will examine the roles of patients, physicians, caregivers, and programmers to clarify existing responsibilities and identify new obligations. An interdisciplinary team—comprising the fields of nursing science, social work, computer science, and ethics—will develop a framework and concrete recommendations for integrating ethical reflection into the development and implementation of eHealth applications.

Project Scope

The DARE collaborative project is part of the BMBF funding initiative “Research on Ethical, Legal, and Social Aspects (ELSA) of Digitalization, Big Data, and Artificial Intelligence in Health Research and Care.”
The prototype from the SMILe project—which was developed for follow-up care after allogeneic stem cell transplantation—serves as the basis for a concrete development scenario of an exemplary eHealth application.
