What a coincidence!
At a total of 16 stations featuring 26 experiments, visitors were able to get hands-on and explore chance from a wide variety of perspectives. Whether at the classic Galton board, cracking codes, or the “Red and Blue—Purely by Chance!” experiment—everywhere it became clear that while chance may seem unpredictable, it nevertheless follows fascinating rules. Everyday phenomena were also in the spotlight: Why do some numbers appear more frequently in newspapers than others? Or how do patterns emerge from apparent chaos? The exhibition offered many “aha” moments and encouraged visitors not to always blindly trust their own intuition.
The high level of interest from schools was particularly gratifying: A total of 16 classes with about 300 students from 11 schools visited the exhibition. The students engaged intensively with the exhibits and took the opportunity to experience mathematics outside the traditional classroom setting. Another highlight was the accompanying introductory lecture on machine learning, which was very well received by all participants.
The exhibition also sparked interest within the university: Three groups from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, each with about 60 students, took part and provided very positive feedback.
These two weeks impressively demonstrated that mathematics is much more than just formulas and theory: it can spark curiosity, encourage critical thinking, and be truly fun.
