Gordon Rohrmair Elected President of the THA for Another Five Years

“With this reelection, the University Council is sending a clear signal of continuity and trust,” said Ramona Meinzer, chair of the University Council and managing director of Aumüller Aumatic. “Over the past few years, Gordon Thomas Rohrmair has strategically raised the profile of THA, increased its visibility, and positioned it as a strong partner for academia, business, and society—both in the region and nationwide. He is an academic administrator in a class of his own.”

Rohrmair thanked the University Council for its trust: “The THA has made great strides during my second term. I would like to continue on this path together with students, faculty, staff, our partners from business and society, and our University Council: with a practical approach, a strong focus on innovation, and a clear commitment to the future viability of our region. In doing so, we will keep our most important goal firmly in sight: We want to create an environment in which our students can develop their skills, take on responsibility, and start their future well-prepared.”

Highlights of his second term included the designation of the Technical University of Applied Sciences Augsburg as a technical university, the expansion of its technological focus in production and automation, artificial intelligence, IT security, and big data, as well as the introduction of new degree programs such as International Information Systems, Business Psychology, Digital.Design and Production, Data Science, Creative Engineering, and Emergency Engineering. Funding from the Bavarian High-Tech Agenda further strengthened research and teaching, including through the creation of new professorships and a distinguished professorship, the establishment of additional technology transfer centers in Landsberg am Lech, Aichach, and Gersthofen, and the expansion of applied research. In 2023, THA established the DigiTech doctoral center, followed in 2024 by the second doctoral center, NITRO. 

According to Gründungsradar, the THA ranks among Germany’s top universities for startups with its THA_funkenwerk initiative, and with the CirTex data innovation community, it sets nationwide standards in the field of the circular economy for textiles. In 2026, the THA became the first university of applied sciences to receive permission from the Federal Motor Transport Authority to test a Level 4 autonomous driving system on public roads throughout Germany. With currently around 7,900 students, the university has reached a new record high.

Prof. Dr. Gordon Thomas Rohrmair, born in Augsburg in 1976, studied business informatics at Augsburg University of Applied Sciences and computer science at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. He earned his Ph.D. in IT security at the University of Oxford. After holding positions in consulting and at Siemens, he was appointed professor of IT security at Augsburg University of Applied Sciences in 2009. From 2010 to 2016, he served as vice president for research and knowledge transfer; since 2016, he has been president of the Technical University of Applied Sciences Augsburg. From 2019 to 2021, he completed the General Management Program at Harvard Business School. Rohrmair is Chairman of Hochschule Bayern and a member of the Executive Board of the Mechatronics & Automation Cluster. In 2026, he received the Bavarian Digital Award (B.DiGiTAL).
