Living in Augsburg

Are you planning to study in Augsburg and still looking for a place to live? We’d be happy to help! The housing market in Augsburg can be particularly challenging at the start of the semester. The Technical University of Applied Sciences Augsburg does not operate its own dormitories. However, we’ll do our best to help you find suitable housing. 

Dorm, shared apartment, subtenant, or your own apartment?

As a student, you have several housing options, so it’s important to find the solution that best fits your personal lifestyle and budget:

  • Student dorms are already furnished and usually very affordable, which is why they’re so popular. Depending on the dorm, you can even take advantage of mentor programs and events.
  • Shared apartments (WGs) are the most common living arrangement among German students. Here, several students live together in one apartment and split the rent and utilities. 
  • Many students who live in their own apartments or in rooms in shared apartments and won’t be using them for an extended period (e.g., while they’re studying abroad) often offer their place for short-term rent. If you’ll be staying with us for a limited time, this could be a good option for you!
  • Having your own apartment is also an option, provided you can afford it. While this gives you maximum independence and privacy, it’s also the most expensive of all the options.

The early bird catches the worm!

The most important thing is to start looking for an apartment as soon as you can. That way, you’ll have the widest range of options and can get a better sense of the different types of housing available. Contact providers and landlords as early as possible (usually by email) or look for available rooms in shared apartments and houses on websites. You can often inquire about student housing directly with the respective providers as well.

Found an apartment?

Once you’ve found an apartment, it’s a good idea to go into contract negotiations as soon as possible and be well-prepared. It’s important to provide and prepare all necessary documents and paperwork while in direct contact with your landlord. Be sure to familiarize yourself thoroughly with your lease and its deadlines and obligations! 

Here's what you should do after moving in

In addition to moving in, there are a few organizational steps you’ll need to take:

  • In Germany, a monthly broadcasting fee (often colloquially referred to as GEZ) of €18.36 is charged. This fee is due per apartment (only if the apartment is registered; see the second point), regardless of how many people live there. So if you live in a shared apartment, the fee only needs to be paid once per apartment and can be split among the roommates. It’s important that you contact the contribution service after you move in to check whether the fee for your residence has already been paid, whether you still need to register yourself, or whether you might even be eligible for an exemption.   • In addition, you must report your new residence to the City of Augsburg if you plan to stay in Germany for more than 90 days. You can do this at your local citizens’ office. Make sure you have all the necessary documents with you!
