Information on Internships and Career Starts for People with Disabilities and Chronic Illnesses

In nearly all bachelor’s degree programs, an internship is now mandatory and a requirement for earning a degree. Therefore, even students with disabilities or chronic illnesses will eventually need to look for an internship.

It’s important to know that you are not required to disclose your disability when applying for an internship. Whether or not you mention your disability directly in the application is therefore up to you. However, especially in cases of visible limitations, it may make sense to inform a potential future employer about it to avoid barriers and surprises on-site during the interview. Keep in mind that you are the expert when it comes to your disability or chronic illness. At the latest during the interview, communicate clearly and openly what you need to be able to work without restrictions (accessible entry/elevator, restroom in the immediate vicinity, equipment/software for computer work, etc.).
