About the Lab

The FabLab (fabrication laboratory) is our university’s creative hub for anyone who wants to bring their ideas to life. Here, students work independently in the fields of 3D printing, electronics, and mechanical machining—from design and assembly to ensuring the final product works. 

After completing a safety orientation, the lab is always open for projects, theses, internships, and personal initiatives. It serves as a go-to resource, particularly for student projects in systems engineering, but also for other degree programs.

The lab is also indispensable for research: in the field of Physical AI, prototype setups and the infrastructure for new experiments are quickly developed here. New prototypes for robots and drones are built here before they are put to use in robotics labs.

The FabLabs are supported by a dedicated community. There’s always something going on here!

Room: J 3.02

Areas of Application in Research, Teaching, and Knowledge Transfer

Teaching: Practical implementation of student projects, bachelor’s and master’s theses, and internships, with a focus on the Systems Engineering program but open to all degree programs.

Research: Central infrastructure for research in the field of Physical AI, rapid prototyping of new robots and drones before they are deployed in the robotics labs.

Transfer: A platform for mechatronic prototype development that makes project results quickly accessible to collaboration partners and industry partners.

Lab Infrastructure

Computers & Software

  • 2 workstations with dual boot (Linux, Windows)
  • Linux software: Cura, OpenSCAD, Blender, and others
  • Windows software: Autodesk Inventor

3D Printing

  • Ultimaker 2+, Ultimaker 2+ Extended, Ultimaker 2 Go, Ultimaker 3
  • Prusa i3 MK2
  • Raise3D N2

Electronics

  • Soldering station with solder fume extraction (conventional tip and hot air)
  • Digital oscilloscopes and digital multimeters
  • Programmable and adjustable power supplies
  • Perforated circuit boards and passive components (resistors, capacitors)

Mechanical Machining

  • Milling machine (under construction)
  • Column drill press (model building, drilling circuit boards)
  • Drill (DIY type)
  • Circular saw (model making, cutting circuit boards to size)
  • Workbench with vise and tools for “rough work” (hammer, wrenches, screwdrivers, Allen wrenches, files, etc.)

Miscellaneous

  • Multifunction printer (copying, faxing, CD/DVD printing)
  • LED projector
  • Hot air gun and heat-shrink tubing set
  • Hot glue gun
  • Industrial vacuum cleaner
