Personal Website

The data center operates the university's central web servers as well as additional subordinate web servers.
All university members have the option to set up and manage their own homepage on one of the web servers.

The PHP scripting language is supported for dynamic content. Apache is used as the web server.

Your personal web directory is automatically created when you create your data center account and is deleted when the account expires.

Connect to the Server

First, connect to the server: login.rz.hs-augsburg.de

Access is via:

  • SFTP
  • SCP
  • SSH

To do this, you’ll need an appropriate client, such as:

  • WinSCP
  • PuTTY

Log in with your personal RZ ID.

Navigate to the web directory

Then navigate to the following path: /www/username

Note

If your directory is not visible under /www, please enter the full path directly in the client. The directory will then be mounted automatically.

Upload files

Upload your files and subfolders to your web directory via SFTP, SCP, or SSH.

If a file named index.html

exists, it will automatically be displayed as the homepage of your website.

By default, directory listing is disabled.
If there is no index.html file, a 403 error will appear.

If you want to enable the display of your files:

  1. Create a file with the following name: .htaccess
  2. Insert the following content: Options +Indexes

After that, the directory contents will be publicly displayed.

Your homepage will then be accessible at the following address: www.hs-augsburg.de/~username

Important Note

For security reasons, connections via the unencrypted FTP protocol are not permitted.

Note the access permissions

To ensure your website is accessible, the following must be true:

  • the web directory itself
  • as well as all files and subfolders it contains

be readable and accessible to other users.

Please set the appropriate access permissions for your files and folders correctly.

If you want to password-protect your website or individual directories, you can use .htaccess and .htpasswd files.

Important

Make sure that the path to the .htpasswd file specified in the .htaccess file is set correctly.

The path must be in the following format: /var/www/username/location-of-your-htpasswd

Replace:

  • username with your personal RZ username
  • "Location-of-your-htpasswd" with the actual location of your .htpasswd file.
