The Master’s program in Computer Science at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Augsburg builds on a solid foundation in computer science and prepares students for challenging roles in business, research, and development. Through practice-oriented instruction, state-of-the-art laboratories, and close collaboration with companies, students acquire scientific and technical skills and have the opportunity to specialize in the fields of software engineering, media informatics, IT security, technical informatics, or data science.

Course Content

The application-oriented master’s program in Computer Science consists of five main components: scientific fundamentals, system architectures, specialization based on required electives, scientific research, and the master’s thesis. 

You will first learn the theoretical foundations relevant to both practice and research. In the System Architecture module, you will analyze and design complex IT systems, covering both hardware and software. 

A wide range of required-elective courses offers you the opportunity to specialize in one of the following attractive areas of focus: software engineering, media informatics, IT security, technical informatics, or data science. You will learn to apply the knowledge you have acquired in a productive manner through project work, workshops, and seminars. 

Great importance is placed on teaching soft skills, particularly English proficiency in the technical and scientific fields. Close collaboration with numerous companies and the faculty’s superbly equipped laboratories ensure a practical education.

Key Areas

By taking specific course modules, this master’s program offers you the following five attractive specialization options:

To specialize in a specific area, you must take selected required electives totaling at least 20 ECTS and focus your thesis on that area. A specialization comprises 45 ECTS, including the master’s thesis, and thus accounts for 50 percent of the master’s program. Successful completion of a study module for specialization is additionally certified in a transcript and certificate to strengthen your profile in the job market.

Enrolling in a study module for specialization is optional. The study modules differ in terms of the required elective courses to be taken. You can find the assignment of required elective courses as well as the respective examination regulations under “Study Documents.”

THA_innos (Institute for Innovative Security) works on behalf of companies and public funding agencies on topics related to IT security: from the development of secure products to forensic analyses and the securing of entire industrial facilities.

THA_ired (Institute for Resource-Efficient Data Transmission and Processing), comprising four research groups from the Faculties of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, develops highly innovative solutions for the efficient processing of data in areas such as autonomous driving, image processing, artificial intelligence, radar technology, and embedded systems.

The THA_ias (Institute for Agile Software Development), in collaboration with partners from industry and research, develops innovative software solutions for digitalization projects. In doing so, it applies and further develops agile system development methods.

Admission Requirements

The admission requirement for this program is a bachelor’s degree, completed with above-average grades at a university, in one of the following fields: Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, Media Technology—or an equivalent university degree typically comprising 7 semesters (210 ECTS credits).

The selection of applicants is based on the grade of the bachelor’s degree. Currently, the Technical University of Applied Sciences Augsburg requires a grade point average of 2.5 or higher. Graduates with a GPA between 2.6 and 3.0 may be admitted following a successful admission interview.

Applicants with a bachelor’s degree in the subjects listed above who have earned fewer than 210 ECTS credits but at least 180 ECTS credits may also be admitted. They must earn the remaining credits needed to reach the required 210 ECTS within the first year after enrollment through supplementary coursework.

For graduates of a bachelor’s program in Computer Science, this additional qualification can be fulfilled by taking elective courses from the Computer Science Department’s catalog for bachelor’s programs or additional elective courses from the master’s program. Courses that were already part of the student’s first degree program may not be taken.

The curriculum for the “Master’s in Computer Science” program at the Faculty of Computer Science includes German-language (required) courses. Exams are also administered in German. German language proficiency at a minimum of Level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) (corresponding to DSH-1 or TestDaF Level 3) is therefore essential for successful completion of the program.

In order to verify the stated admission requirements, applicants must submit the “Preliminary Review Documentation” (VPD for short) from uni assist e.V. and proof of the scope of their prior studies converted into ECTS credits along with their application.
