The Bachelor's programme Energy Efficient Planning and Building explores how buildings can be planned and realised in a sustainable way. Students learn to integrate technical, ecological and design-related aspects to create future-ready built environments.

The programme focuses on topics such as sustainable building materials, circular construction, energy systems, building technology, climate-responsive design and urban planning. Through hands-on projects, interdisciplinary collaboration and digital methods, students develop innovative solutions for the challenges of sustainable construction.

Curriculum

The E2D programme teaches how architecture and engineering can be connected as equal and fully integrated disciplines.

E2D stands for the interaction of Energy, Efficiency and Design, reflecting the three dimensions of sustainability: environmental, economic and social. It can also be understood as “From Emissions to Design” – from the carbon budget to the architectural concept.

Teaching is based on the principles of sufficiency (focusing on what is essential and leveraging synergies), efficiency (making precise use of resources), and consistency (using resources within circular systems). Minimal technical intervention and passive design strategies enable resilient solutions. Particular emphasis is placed on the transformation of existing buildings and circular construction methods.

In the first semesters, you will explore architectural design, urban contexts, construction, and economic viability. At the same time, building physics, building services engineering, and life cycle assessment are approached as integral parts of the planning process.

You will gain expertise in areas such as:

Integrated planning is at the core of the programme. It equips you to manage sustainable planning processes and take responsibility for future-oriented building solutions. An internship or semester abroad provides valuable international and professional experience. In the final semesters, you will deepen your expertise and complete the programme with your bachelor's thesis.

Admission Requirements

A six-week introductory internship is mandatory before starting the degree programme, or at the latest by the end of the second semester.

  • In some cases, vocational training or comparable practical experience may be credited towards the required internship period. Further details can be found in the application for exemption, including the list of recognised occupations (LINK TO BE ADDED, page currently under development).
  • You may also complete your introductory internship, or part of it, abroad. No. As the Bachelor's degree programme in Energy-Efficient Planning and Building is not subject to admission restrictions through a Numerus Clausus (NC), registration with hochschulstart.de is not required.

Integral Design is not a standalone module. It is a core competence and part of the programme’s DNA throughout your studies.
