The Surf Wave in Augsburg

In downtown Augsburg, an artificial surf wave is being created on the Senkelbach, southeast of the Plärrer grounds. To achieve this, an existing riverbed threshold is being artificially narrowed and transformed into a surfer’s paradise. This will create a wave eight meters wide where water sports enthusiasts can surf on a surfboard, bodyboard, or kayak.

The surf wave was initiated by water sports enthusiasts in Augsburg. Students majoring in Civil Engineering at Augsburg University of Applied Sciences are also involved in the design phase. Under the direction of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sergej Rempel, an expert in carbon concrete at the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering, they have been supporting the Surffreunde Augsburg e. V. association since the 2022–23 winter semester in the realization of the artificial river wave.

The Surfwelle Augsburg project is financially supported by funds from the Free State of Bavaria, the City of Augsburg, and Augsburg citizens. As part of its outreach efforts, Augsburg University of Applied Sciences supported the completion of the carbon concrete structure through HSA_transfer—the agency for cooperative university projects funded by the federal-state initiative “Innovative University.” Planning and construction firms from the region were also involved.
