The laboratories of the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering combine scientific principles with practical applications. Here, students, faculty, and researchers work on current issues in the fields of civil engineering, architecture, energy efficiency, environmental engineering, materials science, digitalization, and planning. 
State-of-the-art laboratory and testing facilities enable practice-oriented courses, project work, and theses, as well as application-oriented research and technology transfer projects in collaboration with external partners.

Building Materials Technology, Environment, and Chemistry

The Laboratory for Building Materials Technology, Environment, and Chemistry is the faculty’s central facility for building materials testing, materials analysis, and structural damage diagnostics. Using state-of-the-art testing and measurement technology, it examines building materials and components and addresses issues related to concrete, mortar, screed, and wood construction technology. Other areas of focus include construction chemistry, environmental analysis, and applied research.

Foundation Engineering

The Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory brings together expertise in the fields of soil mechanics, geotechnical engineering, and specialized civil engineering. Using modern laboratory and field tests, it investigates the properties of soils and geotechnical materials and determines key parameters for planning, construction, and quality assurance. Its main areas of focus include site investigation, geotechnical testing, and the experimental study of soil behavior and earthwork processes.

Light Lab

Light

The Lighting Laboratory brings together expertise in the areas of daylight, artificial lighting, and the visual effects of space. Using an artificial sky and modern light measurement technology, various sky and lighting conditions can be realistically simulated and analyzed. The focus is on investigating daylight ingress, evaluating lighting conditions in buildings, and examining the effects of window arrangements, shading, and material surfaces.

Rapid Product Development / CAX

The CAX Lab brings together expertise in the areas of digital product development, reverse engineering, and rapid product development. Using state-of-the-art 3D digitization, CAD, and manufacturing technologies, it enables end-to-end project processing—from data capture and modeling to the production of prototypes and functional models. The lab focuses on digital development, the analysis of complex geometries, and the rapid conversion of designs into physical models.

Urban Water Management

The THA Water Innovation Lab brings together expertise in the fields of municipal water management, water analysis, and environmental engineering. Using state-of-the-art laboratory and measurement technology, it investigates wastewater treatment processes, water quality, and the retention and transport of pollutants in engineered and natural systems. Its focus is on water and wastewater analysis, the investigation of infiltration and road drainage systems, and the development and evaluation of innovative water management methods.

The Surveying Laboratory brings together expertise in the collection, evaluation, and processing of geospatial data. In addition to traditional surveying methods, the laboratory utilizes modern technologies such as photogrammetry, laser scanning, and drone-based data collection. Using state-of-the-art analog and digital surveying systems, the laboratory supports the precise surveying and analysis of structures, terrain, and infrastructure data.
