Medical Technology (B.Eng.)

Course Content
The bachelor program in Medical Technology (B.Eng.) combines engineering expertise with medical fundamentals and applications and prepares you to develop innovative technical solutions for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation.
During the program, you’ll explore modern technologies such as medical measurement technology, medical devices and applications, embedded systems, and artificial intelligence. This is complemented by medical content such as anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry, as well as a thorough understanding of regulatory requirements and standards.
There is a special emphasis on practical application: Through lab work, exercises, and a continuous technical project, you’ll apply your knowledge early on. The practical study semester provides you with valuable insights into companies, hospitals, or research institutions.
Study Plan
Starting in the specialization phase, you can choose your own areas of focus:
- Developing, optimizing, and applying medical technology systems and devices
- Researching, interpreting, and utilizing biosignals
- Using assistive systems and robotics to support patients, overcome limitations, and empower healthcare professionals
Topics such as artificial intelligence, energy efficiency, and sustainability in medical technology are integrated across the curriculum and applied in practice.
You will often work on your bachelor’s thesis in collaboration with a partner from the professional field. This ensures you are optimally prepared for a successful career start in medical technology or for continuing on to a master’s program.

- application-oriented learning

- In-depth study and application to build new skills and apply them in real-world contexts
- an understanding of product development processes, taking into account applicable standards and guidelines
- An industry internship during the practical semester provides direct insight into the medical technology industry.
- In the bachelor’s thesis, innovative topics can be explored scientifically—both in industry and at THA.

With a bachelor’s degree in medical technology, you’ll be ideally qualified for a challenging and rewarding career at the intersection of technology, medicine, and society.
Graduates work wherever technical innovations improve medical care: from the development of modern medical devices to their safe use in everyday clinical practice.
Typical areas of application include
- sensor technology, measurement, and biosignal processing for diagnostics and monitoring
- Artificial intelligence and data analysis in medical applications
- Development and design of medical devices and systems
- Software and systems development, e.g., for medical devices or digital health applications
- Quality management, regulatory affairs, and medical device approval
- Application, service, and sales engineering in clinical settings
- Research and development in companies, institutes, or universities
In addition, a bachelor’s degree opens the door to a master’s program, for example in medical technology, biomedical engineering, or related disciplines.

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering supports you in taking the leap to study abroad. A great option for this is:

- a project (during the break between semesters) or even
- a thesis
To assist you with planning and carrying out your stay abroad, the faculty has an International Faculty Coordinator available as your point of contact. The Center for Languages and Intercultural Communication (ZSI) offers counseling and support across all faculties.

You can also develop international and foreign language skills right here at the university. For example, some lectures are held in English.

Note:
Applicants who have completed vocational training may apply for a spot in a specific program. The vocational training and the intended degree program must be related in terms of subject matter. In addition, proof of a counseling session with the academic advisor for the program is required. This must be uploaded online via the applicant portal by July 15 of the respective year at the latest. Further information on this can be found in the information sheet on the admissions process.
