Why does a light bulb glow? How does electricity get into the outlet? And what happens when lightning strikes? Professor Dr.-Ing. Michael Finkel answers these and many other questions for third- and fourth-grade elementary school students in the LEW High-Voltage Hall at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Augsburg. Every year, in an interactive children’s lecture, students take part in impressive hands-on activities and experience thrilling experiments centered on the topic of electricity. The LEW Children’s University usually takes place during the Easter break. 

Another program offered by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering is the “Parent-Child Programming” workshop, which is aimed at parents and third- and fourth-grade elementary school students. In this workshop, participants use a graphical programming language to program and control various projects—such as a mini-piano or an automatic bicycle taillight—in a playful way. The “Calliope mini” serves as the platform. Participants are supervised in the Microcomputer Technology Lab by Professor Dr.-Ing. Claudia Meitinger, who aims to inspire children with projects developed by students. Sessions are offered for groups of interested students along with their parents by individual arrangement (max. 8 parent-child pairs, with children in third and fourth grade). For high schools and technical high schools, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering offers a range of events and introductory opportunities. Whether it’s Girls’ Day, a trial study program, a school outreach event, or a visit to the annual College Fair at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Augsburg: there are many ways to get to know us. We can also arrange customized workshops and visits, such as a presentation during a school’s career orientation day. Students are welcome to contact us on their own initiative, and we also look forward to hearing from schools and teachers.

Are you interested in a teacher training program or field trip? We offer a variety of programs and workshops, such as:

• Workshops on Calliope Mini (2 sessions of about 120 minutes each, or 4 consecutive hours for both workshops):
• Workshop 1: Getting to know Calliope Mini and gathering ideas for use in the classroom
• Workshop 2: Calliope Mini project for 7th grade
• Workshop for computer science teachers: Introduction to electrical engineering in the context of physical computing
